Daniel DeLacy was born in Nottinghamshire in 1965. He grew up in the small mining town of Ollerton and was educated at the local comprehensive school. Following in the family tradition Daniel went into the mining industry working underground at Thoresby Colliery.
​From that beginning, Daniel left the mine behind and returned to full time education; first at the North Notts College of Further Education, then at the University College Swansea (University of Wales) where he studied English Literature, before moving on to the University of Glamorgan.

In 1995 Daniel visited Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. The experience changed his life.
